Since its early beginnings in the 1890s, our Department has an esteemed history of providing outstanding service in meeting the mental health needs of the people of Chicago, the State of Illinois, and even beyond. From the beginning, clinical services have been enhanced by a strong tradition of excellence in psychiatric research that includes basic neurobiology, cognitive neuroscience, health services, and interventions. Our programs have consistently stayed informed by the most current and innovative thinking in the field of psychiatry.
The Department of Psychiatry provides approximately 50,000 outpatient visits and 13,500 inpatient days each year, and is one of the largest psychiatry programs in the Midwest. Currently there are accommodations for thirty-seven adult inpatients and nine pediatric inpatients (designated solely for DCFS children) at the University of Illinois Medical Center.
Nationally, the Department consistently ranks in the top 20 in National Institutes of Health funded research, as well as first in Chicago and the Big Ten, and second in the Midwest. Numerous faculty members are national leaders in their respective fields. The department hosts three institutes, three federally-funded centers, and numerous targeted programs.
In combination, the department has developed a comprehensive and integrated approach to address major psychiatric disorders and to improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness. We are also looking forward to the future with efforts in community psychiatry, neuroscience and translational research. With this strong foundation, we are well positioned to participate in many new and exciting developments in the area of mental health and behavior. This is a record of achievement and ongoing effort of which we are very proud, particularly as we witness the courageous progress of our patients and their families.
