We are so excited to announce the new format of our awards ceremony, which will close out the 13th Annual NNDC Conference on Wednesday September 22nd, at 5:30 pm ET – 6:30 pm ET.
The NNDC will host the awards ceremony in partnership with the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA). The first half of the awards ceremony with be hosted by the NNDC and include our poster presentation prizes and the second half will be presented by the DBSA to honor the 2021 Gerald L. Klerman Award winners.
The NNDC awards a $500 prize to one poster submission from each submission category. The categories for posters this year are Basic Science, Clinical Programs, and COVID-19 Research. We have received over 60 poster presentations and can’t wait to announce this year’s winners. The awards are selected by the NNDC Conference Program Committee members.
The Gerald L. Klerman Award is the highest honor DBSA gives to members of the scientific community. This award recognizes researchers whose work expands our knowledge of the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder. Winners are selected by DBSA’s Scientific Advisory Board.
The award honors Gerald L. Klerman. He was an educator, researcher, clinician, author, and administrator who specialized in depression, schizophrenia, panic, and other anxiety disorders. Klerman was one of DBSA’s earliest supporters. He conducted the first clinical trial showing the efficacy of medication and psychotherapy in preventing recurrent depression and led the first large-scale, multi-site study to understand the diagnosis, course, and genetics of major depression. Notably, he was appointed as head of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration from 1977 to 1980 by President Jimmy Carter.
DBSA is proud to recognize three clinicians who embody the same dedication, tenacity, and discernment as the award’s namesake. Their work has improved methods of diagnosis, treatments, and long-term quality of life for people around the world living with depression or bipolar disorder.
