The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, a proud part of the nation’s first school of medicine, was founded in 1765. The department has historically played a large role in both psychiatric and behavioral health forums, focusing on such areas as depression, alcohol and drug addictions, schizophrenia, and eating disorders, maintaining leading programs in all of these areas. University faculty are dedicated to forging partnerships with community members, providing professional educational resources for the community and other mental health experts. The department offers treatment for a wide variety of mental illnesses, including inpatient facilities and a 24 hour emergency center which provides crisis intervention. Earning national recognition through multi-disciplinary research, the Department of Psychiatry has earned a consistent #2 ranking in NIH research support out of all national psychiatry departments.
