About Michigan State University & Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services:

Founded in 1964, the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine has drawn upon MSU’s land grant values to educate exemplary physicians, discover and disseminate new knowledge and respond to the needs of the medically underserved in communities throughout Michigan. The medical school includes 16 clinical and basic science departments, eight divisions, and three centers, institutes and programs, all focused on medical education, patient care and research.

MSU College of Human Medicine also collaborates closely with other colleges and departments within Michigan State University, including the Colleges of Engineering, Social Science and Natural Science. Importantly, the college has strong ties with the interdepartmental neuroscience and genetics programs. As a leading community-based medical school with a statewide footprint, the college includes seven community campuses: Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Midland Regional, Southeast Michigan, Traverse City and the Upper Peninsula Region. It is a leader in addressing the needs of the medically underserved in both urban and rural communities.

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, one of the five largest free-standing behavioral health providers in the U.S., has served the west Michigan community since 1910. Pine Rest offers inpatient, partial hospitalization, residential and outpatient services, addiction treatment and recovery, extensive child and adolescent programs, senior care services, as well as specialized assessment and treatment centers. Pine Rest’s services cover the full spectrum of care, from 200 inpatient beds to 20 outpatient clinics throughout Michigan and Iowa, treating over 43,000 adults, adolescents, and children annually – a large majority of whom present with depressive illnesses and related mood disorders.

Pine Rest has developed and enhanced several clinical programs that targets patients with difficult-to-treat depressions including: Treatment Resistant Depression Consultation Program; Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Clinic; and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Clinic.

In addition, Pine Rest offers a unique Mother & Baby Partial Hospitalization Program for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders – one of only three such programs in the country. Pine Rest is a designated Division of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine for Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

• Predoctoral Psychology Internship is designed to prepare interns to become independent practitioners.
• Psychiatry Residency Program – First residency class began in July, 2014. This four-year program has capacity for eight residents per year, post-graduate year one through post-graduate year four for a total of 32 residents in 2017.
• Physician Assistant Psychiatry Residency Program – First class begins in July, 2016. This one-year program will have capacity for two PA trainees for training to specialize in psychiatry.
• Continuing Education – Grand Rounds, Virtual Grand Rounds, Geriatric Education Center, Perinatal Mood Disorders, Pearls for Primary Care, speakers on behavioral health topics which offer continuing education credits for social workers, nurses, physicians, and certified addiction counselors.
